Groot, the beloved tree creature from the Guardians of the Galaxy, has a rich backstory that spans comics and movies. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Groot is one of the members of the Guardians of the Galaxy. He is Rocket Raccoon’s accomplice and together, the pair had traveled the galaxy picking up bounties until they met Star-Lord and Gamora just before the four of them were captured and put into the Kyln, where they also met Drax the Destroyer 1.
Groot’s unusual name comes from the unique vocalizations that characterize Flora colossus. Their stiff vocal cords make everything they say sound like “I am Groot” to untrained, English-speaking ears 2. In fact, Groot’s backstory begins with his debut in 1960’s Tales to Astonish #13 as a member of a race of unfathomably large tree people. His size and strength are used to portray him as a horrific beast, a Flora colossi from Planet X. He reappears occasionally across the decades as either an easy villain or a sideshow horror 2.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Groot I becomes a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy and sacrifices himself to save his allies during the battle against Ronan the Accuser. His son, Groot II, is raised by Rocket and the Guardians. He participates in the conflict against Ego and then Thanos, falling victim to the Blip 3.
The story of Groot is one of redemption and sacrifice. He starts off as a villain but eventually becomes a hero who saves his friends at great personal cost. His unique vocalizations and appearance have made him an iconic character in both comics and movies.
