Distinguishing Encrypted Backups from Unencrypted Backups

One of the primary distinctions between encrypted and unencrypted backups lies in the additional information stored exclusively in encrypted backups, encompassing:

  • Saved passwords
  • Website history
  • Wi-Fi settings
  • Health data
  • Call history

It’s important to note that Face ID/Touch ID and password data are not included in encrypted backups.

Another contrast is the requirement for a password when restoring an encrypted backup. This password becomes essential after establishing the Backup Password.

What is the Backup Password?

  1. The password is necessary to initiate a backup after configuring the Backup Password.
  2. When restoring the backup file to the iDevice, encrypted files mandate a password for restoration, whereas unencrypted backups can be restored without a password.

How to Encrypt Backup Files?

If you wish to encrypt your backup files, navigate to Toolbox > Backup/Restore > Backup and follow the encryption process.

After setting the backup password, if you need to delete or change it, you can click on “Manage Backup Password” in the “Backup” section. You will see options for “Change Password” and “Delete Password.” Whether you want to delete or change the password, you will need to enter the original backup password.

If you change the backup password on your device, the files backed up afterward will be encrypted with the new password. However, the previously backed-up files will still require the original backup password to be entered in order to restore them.

If you delete the backup password on your device, the files backed up afterward will no longer be encrypted.

However, the previously backed-up files will still require the original backup password to be entered in order to restore them.

If you forget the backup password:

If you forget the backup password on your device, you can remove the password by using the “Restore” feature in 3uTools or by “Resetting All Settings” on the device (iOS 11 or earlier requires erasing all data).

However, the previously backed-up files will still require the original backup password to be entered in order to restore them.

To clear the backup password using “Reset All Settings”:

  • On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > General > Reset.
  • Tap “Reset All Settings” and enter your device password. Tap “Reset All Settings” again.

Upon the appearance of the pop-up window, kindly input the password as prompted, repeating the process to ensure accuracy. The password format is unrestricted, allowing flexibility in both length and combination.

It is imperative to memorize the password diligently, as the absence of it will render the utilization or recovery of backup files impossible.

Once the setup is successfully completed, initiate the data backup process on your device by selecting “Back Up Now” in the Backup section. Enter the backup password and patiently await the completion of the backup.

In the event you need to modify or delete the backup password, navigate to “Manage Backup Password” in the “Backup” section. Options for “Change Password” and “Delete Password” will be available. For either action, entering the original backup password is a prerequisite.

If a change is made to the backup password on your device, subsequent backups will be encrypted with the new password. However, previously backed-up files will still necessitate the original backup password for restoration.

Deleting the backup password on your device results in subsequent backups being non-encrypted. Nevertheless, previously backed-up files will persist in requiring the original backup password for restoration.

In the unfortunate scenario of forgetting the backup password on your device, it can be removed using the “Restore” feature in 3uTools or by executing a “Reset All Settings” (iOS 11 or earlier requires erasing all data). Note that previously backed-up files will still demand the original backup password for restoration.

To employ “Reset All Settings”:

  1. Navigate to Settings > General > Reset on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Choose “Reset All Settings” and enter your device password. Confirm by tapping “Reset All Settings” again.
