“The Old Guard” is about a secret team of immortal warriors who have lived for centuries. The leader, Andromache of Scythia, or Andy for short, is played by Charlize Theron, who brings her usual mix of grace and toughness to the role. Andy is joined by three other immortals: Booker, Joe, and Nicky.
They are hired by a former CIA agent, Copley, to rescue kidnapped children in South Sudan. However, the mission turns out to be a trap, revealing their identities and abilities. While escaping, the group learns about another immortal through visions, and Andy sets out to find her.
The film highlights the relationship between Andy and Nile Freeman, a U.S. Marine played by Kiki Layne, who is initially hesitant to join the group. Nile is curious about her new identity and abilities, leading to a compelling dynamic between the characters. The fight scenes, especially on the plane, are exciting and help develop the story as Nile discovers her strength.
“The Old Guard” is not just an origin story. It focuses on the characters’ pasts and how they’ve lived through different times, like Andy and Booker’s meeting during the Crusades, and Joe and Nicky, who were once enemies. The story blends fantasy and realism well.
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the film includes intense action scenes, like Andy using a medieval axe, alongside quiet moments where the characters reflect on the challenges of immortality. Themes of loss and isolation are explored deeply.
Kiki Layne’s portrayal of Nile is believable, showing her struggle with killing and maintaining her humanity. However, the film’s villain, Merrick, is less convincing, portrayed as a typical greedy executive. Chiwetel Ejiofor’s character, Copley, has a complex moral background but doesn’t have a significant role.
Theron’s ability to convey the story through her physical presence is notable. The film ends with an open possibility for a sequel, and while the action is solid, the music choices could be better. Overall, “The Old Guard” offers an intriguing action fantasy with room for improvement in future installments.
