The release of iOS 18.1 is packed with enhancements, but much of the attention has been on the Apple Intelligence features, available only on newer iPhones. If you’re using an older iPhone, however, there’s still plenty to explore in this update. Here’s a breakdown of what’s included for users without Apple Intelligence.
Phone Call Recording
In iOS 18.1, you can now record phone calls, with audio automatically saved in the Notes app. Each recording is transcribed, making it easy to search through conversations. To activate, tap the voice wave icon during a call. Note that an automated message alerts participants to the recording. This feature requires an iPhone 12 or later.
Supported languages for transcription include English (U.S., Australia), Spanish (U.S., Mexico), Mandarin Chinese (China), Cantonese (Hong Kong), and Korean (South Korea).
AirPods Pro 2: Enhanced Hearing Features
If you have AirPods Pro 2, iOS 18.1 introduces new Hearing Health features. You can take a hearing test, use the AirPods as a hearing aid for mild to moderate hearing loss, and protect your hearing by minimizing loud, continuous sounds like construction noise. These features require the latest firmware on your AirPods Pro 2 and a compatible device running iOS 18.
App Store Search Improvements
The App Store now supports natural language search, making it easier to find apps. You can use phrases like “fun new games to play” or “apps for learning new skills” to get specific search results.
Smaller Enhancements
- Control Center: Add quick buttons for AirDrop, Satellite, and controls for Measure and Level.
- Apple Music: Share songs directly to TikTok.
- Wallet: Savings account balances are now tucked behind the Apple Card screen for added privacy.
Bug Fixes
This update also includes bug fixes for Podcasts, Photos, and digital car keys, improving the overall experience.
Looking Ahead to iOS 18.2
Apple is currently testing iOS 18.2, which brings more Apple Intelligence features, a revamped Mail app with new organization tools, and an updated interface for setting default apps.
